10 God, You are my God; Early will I seek You; My soul
thirsts for You; My soul thirsts for You; My flesh longs for You
In a dry and thirsty land where there is no water. 2 So I have
looked for You in the sanctuary, to see Your power and Your
glory. 3 Because Your lovingkindness is better than life, my
lips shall praise You.
This is all about longing, a
thirsty soul, a longing body, a desire for God, and it starts
early. The Psalmist rises in the morning and the first thing he
wants is God. His soul is thirsty. He’s like a wonderer in the
sand in the desert longing for water. In fact, David wrote that
Psalm while hiding in the wilderness of Judea but longing to be
back worshiping in Jerusalem. This is the heart of a true
believer. This is the panting heart, the thirsty heart, the
hungry heart that can only be satisfied by the presence and the
power of God. What did he want to see? He wanted to see God’s
power manifest in his life, God’s glory, he wanted to experience
God’s lovingkindness, His mercy, and His grace so that he could
offer praise. When you really get down to it what do you long
for in life? If you were to write down three things you most
desire would God be at the top? Oh God it’s you I want, I want
you in my life, I feel dry and thirsty, I feel weak and lonely,
I need your power, your glory, your lovingkindness. It’s better
to me than to live and I want to praise you. God had a
relationship with David, but here we find that David had a
relationship with God and God was the priority of his life.
That’s the way it should be for every believer. Cultivate that
by being in the Word of God. Read through the Psalms, find out
the greatness of your God and that should motivate you to long
for His fullness. – John MacArthur
