You can never know too much about the Bible and
God’s promises to us. As a new year begins consider planting the
Word of God on your heart by committing to memorizing scripture.
Over the next 52 weeks we will be exploring, and committing to
memory, 52 passages that have been chosen as some of the most
inspiring and uplifting verses in the Bible. Of course this isn't
meant to be a definitive list, but it’s a good start in planting the
Word of God on our hearts. Our goal is not to get you to just
memorize Scripture—but to also understand the Scripture you are
memorizing and plant them into your daily lives. Included with each
memory verse is a brief explanation of each passage which will help
you have the context of the passage, and not just the passage
itself.
To help you commit these passages to memory here are a few
suggestions. Copy the Scripture passage onto a note card or cut it
out of this page and keep it in your pocket, display it at your
desk, tape it to your bathroom mirror, or review it while waiting in
line at lunch. This will help reinforce visually what you are
committing to memory. Also, read over the passage explanation as
many times as you can each day during the week to help you really
understand the meaning behind the words in the passage. Another
thing you should do is spend some time meditating on the passage and
explanation and then ask yourself the following questions:
¨
What does
this passage teach me about Jesus Christ?
¨ Does this passage contain any
command for me to obey?
¨
Is there any promise for me to claim?
¨ Is there any instruction for me
to follow?
Not all of the questions can be answered for
every passage. Memorizing for memorization sake won’t do anyone any
good, but if you make the passage real, and applicable to your life,
then you will be equipped to use the passage when you need it.
